We tend to recommend Sony projectors, as these are easy to obtain replacement bulbs for in New Zealand (generally 7 to 10 day wait time). Most other models are either difficult and/or expensive to get replacement bulbs for.
When looking for a projector, the important things to consider are:
WEIGHT: Smaller portable models (less than 2Kg) are generally more expensive than the larger/heavier models (3Kg and above). Portable models usually suit travellers better.
PURPOSE: Moving images/video, vs. PowerPoint / datashow presentations. Video/DVD images generally require a more expensive "3LCD" (or similar) projector.
REPLACEMENT BULBS: Cost and availability. Bulbs generally cost $500 to $800, and can last from 300 to 3000 hours depending on the model. Most bulbs are not kept in stock in New Zealand, so often take 7 to 10 days to come from Australia.
